The History of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe - Console documentary
I had the PC version and got it cheap even as a special edition. I had the guide to it and discovered quickly the combo system was very broken. You could chain almost anything together after a popup move. It was too easy. Too repetitive and it never seemed to have the feel of the arcade version.
You forgot the bug in the original where you could do the first part of Sub Zero's "deep freeze" fatality at any point during a round, and it was unblockable and undodgable.
That was an absolutely magnificent review, as always. But! I'm going to greedily ask for the same deep dive into the G.O.A.T: Streets of rage 2!! I was a Nintendo kid, but after I played Streets of Rage 2 I started having some serious doubts about who was actually the console king. To this day Street of Rage 2 is still my all time favorite beat em up.
Who here, other than me who commented on the video years ago, is excited to play this classic on modern day consoles when it releases on the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection this year?
What the heck? What real gamer didn't want even a taste of Arcade experience at home? Who is not curious what they missed out on (or not)!?
You forgot Rolling Thunder Sly Spy ESwat and Robocop.
No I have already covered those
Great video, "Frogger" along with "Dig-dug" were a small hand-full of games i could actually see well enough to play in the arcades.
i didn't know there was other "Streets of Rage" Music out there. i only have one CD. i put in tons of hours on the Master System "Streets of Rage" & will always be on my top list as this was my 1st time i was able to complete a Beat'em Up by myself! Give yourself a pat there Patman as this was a gem! Now if you excuse me i am going to paint the Streets with my Rage on the Master System one more time!
Great review of a super classic and terribly difficult game / series. I still don't think I beat the first board, maybe once or twice?
I appreciate you actually using the composite color with the DOS version!
Peter Pepper in the Aquarius version looks like a can of beer with legs, which just reminds me of the Rainier Beer commercials I used to see on TV as a kid in the 80s.
I always loved Xevious and never cared for Galaga. Xevious to me was just mystery. Why were there Nazca symbols, what am I invading? What is next!? Why are all these ships so cool looking! Galaga was boring static shooter that once you saw one level you saw them all with a little bit of gimmick thrown into the mix where you could double your ships, but that was about all. Xevious > Galaga FOREVER!
“The hard way” should been “where I met my B of an ex wife”
I never saw one outside of a gaming magazine until i was in my 30s and saw one in a used game store.
Amiga 600 sports 4D driving DREAMSCAPE WHICH WAS BASICALLY THE EXACT SAME GAME
Pretty sure they also took inspiration from the 1984 movie Streets of Fire. Also, the part where you mention sprite versions of the SOR4 characters, how is it that the enemies are sprites too? When I play that way the enemies are still the HD versions. Or is it a secret part where you zap the arcades I’ve missed? I thought I’d found them all and don’t recognise the part shown here. Thanks
I love all of your videos, Pat. Thank you for being so consistent and high quality! Streets of Rage is my favorite beam 'em up series of all time.
@PatmanQC - History of arcade game documentaries I think the Battletoads arcade game didn't do well due to the Darker & Edgier tone.
I reckon the streetfighter 1 characters r sik,F knows why capcom dont use them in future games ,the ninja guy looks epic ,caocom r orob best gaming comoany around always deliver the goods
This is my new favorite channel I can't stop watching you're videos can you do one on castlevania
Thanks have already covered It so check the archives
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries awesome on my way to find it now keep up the work your docs are the best 💪
Wouldn't it be nice if they released the game again with modern graphics all 3 , music is epic too ! 90's classic stuff
That would be sweet
Some good stuff , I never knew some stuff here
Thanks a lot
Wow didn’t know Eswats and Streets of rage was connected lol
It's a little-known fact :-)
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I had Eswats I actually found the game in the street around 93 , took it home and played it, it was a fun game , just hard to
I remember Me and a friend was playing Final Fight SNES and how watered down it was from the Arcade but still had a BLAST with it!! But when SoR came out WOW!! GAME CHANGER!!😅😁🌟💃🔥💪🎮🎮
Absolutely :-)
This was one of many games kids on my block played at the local grocery store back in the late 80's. Only one player I saw managed to get the rare diamond bonus. 💎
Fantastic, love this game
I like how you show two different people and say he did the voice like we are suppose to know which one in the picture it is.
Thanks
It looks like the C64 emulator that you're using had some kind of filter enabled. HQ2X or something like that, so everything was getting overly rounded out. Nice video!
Entirely possible, I was struggling to get footage captured properly. Thanks
@@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries I only noticed because my brother used to play Popeye on the C64 a lot in the 80s. :) I always liked it, but could never play it for that long. :)
Played this game on the Gameboy. Was the best fighter on Gameboy. So responsive. Incredible music. Was amazed. Idol was also much bigger. It was so close to the arcade. Just yellow and black. Could not believe my eyes and ears. You could punch in any direction. The speed was incredible for a gameboy game. Unlike mk3 on the gameboy. What a joke that was.
Yuzo is the best game soundtrack composer ever only one that still throws concerts with thousands to show up
I would love to see him in concert
yes do SOR2 for sure would love a deep dive in the patmanqc style
Thanks buddy
Makes me wish I could play Time Crisis and Point Blank, great video thank you!!!
Absolutely, thank you
So I’m walking down the street and kick over a trash can. Meat rolls out. I’m supposed to pick it up and eat? No thank you.
yaaaaassss
You will of I wanna live. Unless you use a game genie cheat code
LOL good call
The character average age is 21 years old :D. .... how different where the things back then, right now a 21 years old guy is chasing pokemons and gettin excited to tears with the new seasons of One Piece ..... Not delivering street justice in a city taken by the crime gangs....
LOL good call
Best beat em up series there is. A bit apprehensive about it going 3D with Revolution but one could argue it’s hard to top 4 at the moment. 2 is my personal favourite tho. Hot take, eh?
I couldn't agree more
Happy Little Beat 'Em Ups! Thanks Pat-Man!!! I love this franchise! I haven't heard of Revolution though at the time of typing this message!
LOL thanks buddy
Isnt it amazing that they follow up the worst one ever with the best one ever
I remember scouring the „warez“ landscape for an arcade version of SoR about 20 years ago. Since a lot of Sega titles originated as technologically superior versions in the arcades before hitting the Mega Drive/Genesis, I thought this applied to SoR as well. Since the internet was a primordial chaos and no one confirmed that no original arcade version exists, I was looking for much, much longer than I’m comfortable admitting today😂😂😂
I think that The Takeover pays tribute to this game franchise for sure 😊
The Tesla Cybertruck reminds a lot of the vehicle in this game.
Fantastic review! Lots of great memories of this game!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Pengo itself was influenced by the sucess of Namco's Puck Man (later renamed Pac-Man) and Universal's Lady Bug, released in previous years. Sega knew they needed to have a maze game of their own to ride the wave of sucess this genre had.
Call in the airstrike 😮
The new one sucked Felt short & ending sucked Part 3 is the best one
Depending on who you ask SEGA may have made the first beat em up. Wikipedia will say its Kung-fu Master (1984), but SEGA released a game titled Samurai in 1980. It's a single screen game, not a belt scroller though, but many of what would become commonplace in the genre started there.
18:44 Talk about humping someone to death. I probably played the us version, but not the Japanese version. 😮
Yes!!!
The one thing that always annoyed me about the Genesis is the poor audio. It sounds so scratchy and incoherent compared to the SNES. It helps when the SNES has custom-made audio chips developed by SONY. Don't get me wrong, the Genesis had some great games in its own right, but since I have always loved RPGs starting back with the original Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on the NES, my next console was quite obvious. That would be the SNES. I grew up during the great battle of 16-BIT consoles and how kids were launching verbal attacks against their rival consoles and saying words of defense of their preferred system. What it all boiled down to is the games. For me, it was and still is RPGs. Therefore, I chose the SNES. With games such as Final Fantasy II & III, Earthbound, Breath of Fire, Illusion of Gia, and the one I thoroughly enjoyed, Super Mario and the Legend of the Seven Stars. Even to this day, that has always been my favorite RPG. Not because of the characters from the Mario universe, well that significantly helped, but it was the overall gameplay. When you take the RPG wizards from SQUARE and pair them up with Shigeru Miyamoto and his team, you get one hell of an RPG.
This made me decide to buy a Genesis at the time. Luckily, my brother got an SNES a bit later too.
Streets of Rage is still a GOAT series of beat'em ups til this day. Streets of Rage 2 is my personal favorite plus the stellar musical score of Yuzo Koshiro and Axel's Grand Upper lol Thanks for another awesome retrospective PatmanQC
